Dean Wormer assures the mayor there won't be any trouble this year

The Crimson reports Harvard officials are going to do everything they can to keep freshmen from dumping a whole truckload of fizzies - and burning boats - into the Charles River next week:

Committee members at yesterday's monthly meeting approved plans to discourage the annual "River Run," which they characterized as an unsafe, alcohol-laden pseudo-tradition.

“We're trying to tell people they shouldn't do it," said Dean of Freshmen Thomas A. Dingman '67 about River Run after the meeting. "For those who blunder ahead, they will be met by law enforcement."

What are you lookin' at?

A perpetually grumpy royal lion peers down at you from the old Cunard building on State Street. Maybe he resents the loss of empire.

Mistrial for Dorchester woman charged with killing husband on his birthday

A Suffolk Superior Court jury declared itself hopelessly deadlocked today in deliberating the fate of Sharon Fitzpatrick, who allegedly used a knife to kill her husband during an argument over his coming home too late, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office says.

Judge Judith Fabricant dismissed the jurors after three days of deliberations and declared a mistrial. Prosecutors said they plan to re-try Fitzpatrick for the death of Sylvester Mitchell around 4:30 a.m. on May 5, 2007 in their Evans Street apartment.

Kerry speaks out: Don't discriminate in giving blood

I can only shake my head when I see those white posters with the iconic red crosses at the campus where I work.

Give blood? Sure.

Except that my blood is not the right kind of blood. My donation, after completing the form in which I am asked point-blank about my sex life, will be summarily thrown away–despite the fact that this blood could save another life.
