Kabobs come to Dorchester

Remember when no self-respecting neighborhood could be without a Thai place? Middle Eastern food seems to have taken pad thai's place as the sign of happening 'hood (can you imagine that West Roxbury is about to get its second kebab place? Roslindale, take notice). Dottie Hottie reviews Chateau Kabob, 789 Adams St.. Her verdict: Shows promise, but needs more work.

Delta House shut down after wild party

Mayor Curtatone better watch out on Homecoming Day. The Tufts Daily reports Somerville health officials shut the Delta Upsilon frat house at Tufts for a variety of health and safety concerns after firefighters responded to an alarm that went off in the middle of a party:

"So, we were having a party Saturday night; at some point during the party the front door came off its hinges, which was obviously a bad sign," he said. "Later, someone from another fraternity pulled our alarm; when that fire alarm got pulled, some of the fire department people came to make sure everything was alright."

Rumors have surfaced that an Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) brother pulled the alarm at DU and that the fire alarm that went off at the AEPi house later that same night was pulled in retaliation. Ross declined to comment further on this.

The Mad Bubbler of Allston/Brighton

On the advice of a friend, TKOG took up bubble blowing as a substitute for the cigarettes she's trying to quit. And now she can't stop:

... As I walked down Harvard Ave, I eventually became aware of two sets of footsteps shuffling behind me. A cute young couple walked a few feet behind me, and obviously had been for at least five minutes. I imagined their date-night clothes stained all over in bubble-sized daubs and immediately apologized. No, the guy told me, keep going, please. She likes them.

For ten minutes, they walked a few paces behind me, downwind (or, more accurately, downbreeze) while I blew thousands of bubbles. Finally I paused at a stoplight and, when they didn't come abreast of me, turned around to see whether they had left. The couple was standing under a streetlight a few feet behind me, surrounded so thickly by bubbles that the whole night was a Monet. In this iridescent haze, they kissed. ...

The Filene's Memorial Hole: Is the developer just a big schmuck?

Vincent Price as ruined landmark: Before it was Christoishly covered upVincent Price as ruined landmark: Before the remains were Christoishly covered up.

Steven Roth, the New York real-estate mogul who gave us the Hole, told an audience of Columbia architecture students last week that he deliberately pulled a similar stunt in New York in the hopes of gaining concessions from the city:

Why did I do nothing? Because I was thinking in my own awkward way, that the more the building was a blight, the more the governments would want this to be redeveloped; the more help they would give us when the time came.

And they did.

Of course, nothing gets Tom Menino's Boston up quite like a New York developer pulling stuff like that. The Globe reports Hizzonah has directed the BRA (which, remember, can do pretty much anything it wants) to start looking at taking the whole site over by eminent domain. Sure, the city's supposed to at least have some pretense it's taking the land for some greater good - maybe they can finally build that downtown swimming hole. Wonder what Roth's Boston partner on the deal, John Hynes, thinks?
