Alleged T fare evader turns out to be wanted for indecent assault and battery on a minor
A man allegedly spotted by a T cop skipping a fare gate at Quincy Center this morning is an unregistered convicted sex offender wanted in Suffolk County on a warrant for indecent assault and battery on a minor.
According to an MBTA Transit Police report, William Garfield, 37, evaded the fare, along with an adult female companion at the Red Line stop around 10 a.m.
Garfield, who gave the Pine Street Inn as his home address, was convicted in 1993 on two counts of indecent assault and battery, one on a minor and one on an adult, and again in 2006 on charges of indecent assault and battery on a minor and rape and abuse of a child, according to his record at the state Sexual Offense Registry Board.
In addition to the outstanding indecent-assault charge, Garfield was also wanted for failing to register as a sex offender. His companion, a 42-year-old woman, was issued a citation for fare evasion.
Innocent, etc.

Ever Notice.....
That each time the Transit PD catch someone for fare evasion or smoking on a platform they are arrested for a warrant? $1.70 would have purchased him another day of freedom.
Not terribly surprising. Law
Not terribly surprising. Law abiding types generally pay their fares. While I can imagine kids sneaking in because they can (and don't have money), I'd wager that a disproportionate number of adults who regularly evade fares have some sort of record.
Take a good hard look folks,
Take a good hard look folks, this must be the first of two fare evasion tickets that will be written this year. I'm predicting the next fare evasion citation will come in September.
Make the tickets for fare
Make the tickets for fare evasion start at $100. Collar people one after the other on the Green Line. If I have to pay MBTA for the privilege of wasting 2 hours a day, everyone should.
yeesh
Is this what Randy Quaid has sunk to?
LOL!!
LOL!!
Ia that all you people have
Ia that all you people have to say, or to report ? Why is this person not locked up in jail? Please investigate and follow up to complete the news story.
No need for "innocent etc"
This guy is a convicted sex offender. He's not innocent. Unless you meant to imply that he might be innocent of the far evasion.
Presumed innocent of another charge, though
the one on the outstanding warrant.
I always thought that was a
I always thought that was a sarcastic zinger Adam throws in for kicks.
Sarcasm? Me?
Actually, in this case, it's laziness. I wanted to put in a disclaimer, but didn't want to have to always type "Innocent until proven guilty in a court of law" or whatever.
