Alleged one-man crime wave arrested in Concord

Steven Stanley

A man wanted across eastern Massachusetts for a variety of crimes - including attacking a Boston cop - was arrested in Concord last week for allegedly stealing expensive eyeglass frames from a health center.

Steven Stanley, 44, of Weymouth, faces charges of larceny over $250 in Concord, Burlington, Braintree, Natick, Randolph and Wrentham. He faces three warrants in Boston for larceny over $250, in addition to a charge of assault and battery on a police officer. Natick also wants him for assault and battery.

Concord Police report somebody stole some expensive frames from the Harvard Vanguard center on Baker Street on Thursday. The next day, reports came in from two optometry shops - in Acton and Concord - of two men "acting suspiciously" before employees kicked them out.

Two Concord Detectives then located a vehicle matching the description of the suspect vehicle. Inside were the two individuals fitting the description of the suspects outlined in the radio broadcast.

Police determined that one of the suspects, Stanley, was the man involved in the eyeglass frame larceny from Concord on Jan. 8. He was arrested and transported to the Concord police station.

Innocent, etc.

It makes sense that eyeglass frames are a hot theft item. They're offensively expensive, very small and light, and sitting out there on the racks for you to try on.

If you search ebay for designer frames, you get a lot of "new without original case" offerings (which I assume means "stolen.")

The last time I was at Lenscrafters, there was a guy being super-sketchy near the women's high-end frames. The staff were watching him like a hawk and even called security for a "routine check." When he heard that, he strolled out like he was done with his perfectly ordinary Saturday night of looking at ladies' glasses.

All of the "designer" frames, and most of the others in optical shops, are made by a company called Luxottica. The company also happens to own Lenscrafters, Pearle Vision*, and a couple of other large chains. With that near-monopoly, they get to charge hundreds of dollars for an item that costs them a couple of bucks to make.

* If you pay attention, when Pearle and Lenscrafters have sales or send out coupons, the discounts and resulting final prices are the same at both stores.

How many warrants does a person have to have before the police start looking for them?

There are so many people with "warrants out" for them nowadays, typically due to trivial stuff like missing a court date over a traffic ticket/drug possession/whatever, that I don't think the police even bother to look for such people unless the individual is outright dangerous to let keep walking around out there. They just wait for the person to do something stupid, like get pulled over for a traffic violation or jump a T fare-gate (go read the TPB Blog and see how many of the people they detain for fare-dodging or smoking on the platform end up arrested for outstanding warrants), and then the warrant gets noticed when the person's name is run through the system.

Sometimes the police park on a busy road and scan every license plate, which checks a national warrant database which doesn't distinguish between serious crimes and trivial stuff like old tickets or missing a jury duty notice.
