First of two new coffee places in Roslindale opens; second could open any day now

PS Gourmet Coffee reports its newest home of the bucket is now open at Washington and Poplar streets in Roslindale.
The store, which gets its name from its home base in Perkins Square in South Boston, is known for its large, flavored ice coffees.
The Green T Coffee Shop - which gets its name from its original location along the Green Line on Huntington Avenue in the Fenway - is hoping to have at least a "soft" opening over the next week or so at its new outlet at South and Walter streets. Unlike PS Gourmet, it will be the sort of place where you can sit and linger over a latte for awhile.

Did the owners of these places consult Mayor Walsh and see if the neighborhood had "enough" coffee places yet? Seems to be the way businesses need to operate these days.

Roslindale is all in for new coffee places. Come back and ask when we have five of them within 700 feet of each other, though (and actually, Starbucks would be an interesting issue, not so much because of overcaffeineation, but because Roslindale Square has long resisted chains - and yes, one could argue they lost that war when Subway and Petco came in).
There should not be an unconditional surrender
to chains because a couple of them snuck in. I think it's still important to maintain a certain quality of atmosphere in Roslindale Square.

Great work filling all those empty store fronts and keeping Kitchen Central in business. You must be very proud of your achievements.

...and also doesn't understand that some people don't want to live in a suburban mall.
What saved Rosi square is local businesses dedicated to Rosi, not large chains hoping to skim some fat from an up-and-coming neighborhood.
I don't think that there should be a defacto prohibition on chains setting up shop here, but neither do I think they have any loyalty to the community, nor do I think that they draw people into the neighborhood - it's distinct local businesses that do that (yes, even places like Seymore Greens, which makes me roll my eyes every time I walk by).
Saved from what?
Better value in real estate is what draws people to the 'community' more than places like Tony's. It's cheaper than JP and WR and it's closer to the major employers with better transport options than Hyde Park.
Yes, I didn't live here in 1995 but I hardly think that precludes me from having an opinion about the place I live in 20 years later. This isn't West Roxbury you know.
I remember the Square before 1995
I used to go to George's Sight and Sound after school in the mid 80s. What "saved" the Square wasn't a lack of chains. It was the opening of a supermarket which lead to new restaurants. Take those things away, and the place is the same was it was when I was a kid.

If all you see when you are in the square is nail places and Seymores, then you have some serious perception filters on.
No chains?
Aren't both of these fine establishments the second locations for non-Roslindale coffee joints?

I swear the place was like a pregnant lady entering her fourth trimester. I saw the place last Friday and assumed a Saturday opening, and yesterday it looked like construction had resumed.
Good luck to them. I'm sure my caffeine addicted wife will pay them at least one visit, since they are at the bus stop.

I'm surprised at how long this place has take to open given that they weren't starting a some terrible starting point like say something opening up on the old Bob's Pita space. Flavored ice coffee is not my bag but I'll try it once at least.
Also surprising is how long it is taking Delfino to open their new place across the street. It looks like that was ready months ago. Licensing issues?
The new Derna's
No clue what the issue is, but it's not licensing - they're all set with both a food license and one of those new neighborhood-specific beer-and-wine licenses.
Walking past that place
Walking past that place breaks my heart every time, I'm so ready for a casual drinks and apps place besides Redds and yet it keeps dragging onnnnnnnnn
