Drama on the Orange Line as dog, owner briefly separated by train door
By adamg on Tue, 01/09/2018 - 5:00pm
Krista reports on the scene on the Orange Line at Tufts Medical Center this afternoon when a man and his dog started to get off the train, only the door closed between them, leaving them attached by a leash, but unable to get to each other:
This very good boy is stuck inside the orange line while his owner is on the platform. Apparently the operator shut the doors on his leash & now the door is stuck.
Four minutes later, she updated:
The dog is free! The door is stuck open & a T dude is working on it.
And now we're being herded off the busted car.
[N]ot so much as a whimper! Just patiently waiting and keeping his eyes on his owner.

That photo would almost be
That photo would almost be Pulitzerworthy (or at least Norman Rockwell Sat Eve Post coverworthy) if only the photog had been a skosh to the left, capturing all of Phido's face. (The expression on the closest person's face is priceless.)
We're still lucky
I agree that this just missed the mark of being perfect, but I still feel lucky that someone was there to share this cool moment with the rest of us.
Don't look now, but boston.com ripped off your comment
At the time of this writing is a headline on boston.com saying that this was a Norman Rockwell ish thing. Sue their ass.

Adorable!
Poor pup.
Poor pup.
I would have unclipped the leash
While holding the dog's collar. Only to prevent accidental ugliness.
I would have held the leash
Maintain control over and a connection with the dog. You can drop the leash anytime it's not safe to do so.
Would probably keep a trained but rambunctious dog orderly during a stressful time.
Holding the leash
Would do much good if the train started to move.
Look at the picture
If the train started to move, and the owner held the leash, the dog could be strangled.
Pup
So cute!
Owner won't
leave his dog.
Doors can be pulled open.
Doors can be pulled open with a bit of strength/leverage from inside, or from outside on the platform. Doors are engineered not to crush a person that could get caught halfway through the doors.
No, doors cannot be pulled
No, doors cannot be pulled open once they are fully closed. The current fleet of Orange Line cars has doors designed to bounce when striking an obstruction, but once they are closed-they are closed.
A leash?
A LEASH broke the door?
This Could Have Been Prevented
This incident and other like it could have been prevented-if guards (crew who operate the doors) were still on the trains. The motorman cannot see all the doors on a six car train, T management knows this-that's why they need attendants on many platforms with flashlights to assist the motormen. This is 19th century, not 21st century! The T spent who knows how much on cameras to assist in operating the doors they obviously aren't adequate otherwise we wouldn't need these employees on the platforms with flashlights.
