I believe these college police chief jobs come with many perks including free tuition for the Chief's kids. Almost all of the major campus police chiefs and high ranking college police officers in Greater Boston are former leaders of Boston or State Police. Evans has maxed out on his city pension at age 55+ and 32 years service, so it makes sense that he would grab the pension and a six figure job with free tuition for his kids and perhaps BC admission for anyone he wants. Good for him, I believe he was well respected by the officers.
A better question is why Chang and Evans are leaving in the same week that Marty grabs a pay raise and who will replace them? Remember that the police commissioner job is civilian, suit and tie with no police experience necessary. Bears watching.
All full time benefited BC employees regardless of their position are eligible for free turion for their kids after a 5 years of service, this has nothing to do with being hired as police chief, just a great general higher ed perk. Policy is at BC.edu/hr
Harvard offers ZILCH tuition assistance to staff. Tenured faculty get zero interest student loans for their dependents (i.e., what little help there is goes to those who need it least).
MIT used to offer 1/2 tuition to any school, don't know the current state of it. Most private universities offer something to dependents who attend, but that wouldn't help most people at the super-selective schools.
Maybe your friend negotiated some extra benefits, but staff do not get tuition assistance for their kids. Maybe athletic staff have different contract than other union/non-union staff. There are great benefits if staff want to go to the Extension School, but not for family members.

Harvard does not offer tuition benefits to children of staff. If you happen to work there and your child is accepted, you/your child will reap the benefit of an exceptionally terrific financial aid policy. But that financial aid is not connected to a parent working there.
Really? This guy carried Boston through some of its toughest times this past decade and you’re being a right-wing hysteric bitching about his kids maybe getting fucking tuition reimbursement?!
Imbecile. Stop talking. You literally embarrass the human race every time you write a scribe about “the man” holding you down.

I don't agree with Fish's politics either but I didn't read anything he said as being disrespectful to the Commissioner. Have a little civility, anon-troll.

I somehow doubt that a standard perk of working for BC - a perk shared by janitors with 7 kids all the way up and down the ladder - would ruffle your feathers were it a perk of a private equity firm.
This is not public money. If the Catholic Church wishes to provide free education for its employees - something it at least used to do for even the cooks and cleaners in Catholic High Schools - that is none of your business.
Mayor Marty would also like to thank the MSP and the MBTA for keeping the media spotlight on their corruption and incompetence and not on city agencies.
Came to speak to my family and neighbors in Dorchester. He described his own upbringing. He made us feel the important role we had as role models and in creating a community. I was so impressed that while I have many reservations about things that have occurred in the police department in Boston over the years, I became a huge fan. My wife and friends still tease me about it. But he’s been a great inspiration. I believe that man is not only brilliant but I honestly believe he cares.
BPD won't confirm this until 5 pm today.
Evans is being pushed out so Willie Gross can become the new commissioner.
Walsh will receive national acclaim for hiring an African American police commissioner in Boston, which has a national reputation for being racist.
Amidst the acclaim, it will then come out that Marty is backing Capuano in his re-election bid.
But Pressley's people can't say Marty doesn't support people of color -- because, "Hey, we have a minority as the commissioner!"
And Evans -- who did an amazing job -- is just collateral damage to the other Marty's grand, national aspirations.

I think it's fairly common.
I believe Harvard and Northeastern do the same thing. Not sure about BU, but it's a good possibility.
BU as well
Yep, BU as well - or at least they used to. My mom was a lab tech at BUSM, and I got a free ride for 8 semesters, way back 40+ years ago.
Not Harvard
Harvard only offers free tuition to professors' children.
No surprise there.
One way to keep the commoners in their place.
Harvard? Bah humbug

Depends....
Friend of mine works in the athletic department at Harvard. Makes about 50K a year there and his kid go to go there for about $2,500 a year.
Harvard is one of those places where if you make less than a certain amount, they will give you a huge financial aid package.
In that case,
I will modify my earlier statement about commoners. Good to hear that.
Something else going on

I think his family makes less than 100k a year.
Which pretty much means you will pay lass than 10k a year at a place like Harvard. I actually think it's free if you make less than 65k.

Yes.
Incivility is not hate
Incivility is a natural response to hate and hatefullness and all things hatey pretending to be "civil".
In other words, go away. We don't want haters here. Especially ones who play games to cover their hatred and fear of women, minorities, gays, etc.
...well...
Ya. I wish you a happy Fourth of July and be safe, let the men light off the dangerous fireworks for you, sweetheart.

I know what the Irish says and the Spanish seems benign. What are the other three non-English phrases?
Arabic
Is correct to the original phrase. The other languages are Urdu and Korean.
I think the dmc is trying to suggest that the home of hatred is Ireland.
I encourage you all not to believe him though.
Now the fact that he put the vulgar Gaelic phrase where the Hebrew kindness was in the original...
any significance?

I Think
It’s the public institutions that are less likely to include that perk nowdays. But to be honest my experience has an n of 2.
Catholic Church provide to
Catholic Church provide to their employees?
No.
Network of most of the Jesuit colleges in the USA to at least some of their employees? Yes, with some limitations on reciprocity.
True
" Remember that the police commissioner job is civilian, suit and tie with no police experience necessary. Bears watching."
If I'm not mistaken, if the replacement is a uniform, he or she comes under the class 4 pension system. Best three years towards the pension.

Just to make underage drinking episodes for BC students disappear....
BC in smack dab in the middle
BC in smack dab in the middle of the Commonwealth's secret brutal war with the TLF. They need Evans to quell in the insurgency.
They're trying to smuggle
They're trying to smuggle illegal immigrant turkeys into Boston across the border from Newton.
Build the wall... errr... chicken-wire fence! Make Waban pay for it!!!
Bill Evans
has done a terrific job for this city.
Thanks for a job well done!
And I've enjoyed living in a city where black lives actually do matter.

A loss for Boston
Commissioner Evans has given over 30 years of service to the city, from cop on the block, Captain of two districts, and as head of the Boston Police.
He's spent many a late night on the streets after gun violence. He's been a national champion for gun control laws and community policing.
He's a family man, a imarathon runner, a university professor (BU has free tuition for employees, yes.)
Most of all, he's a true, frank, down-to-earth guy.
Evans denies report
Says he's staying.
