Morality Police scheduled to stand outside West Roxbury liquor store tomorrow

Looks like self-appointed Protector of Public Virtue Bob Joyce and a few of his friends will actually be picketing Gary's Liquors on the VFW Parkway tomorrow to protest Gary's refusal to stop offering copies of the Phoenix.

They're scheduled to be there between 1 and 5:30 - should you find yourself in sudden need of some beer or wine and a chuckle or two. I spoke briefly to Gary today; he says Bob has been great for business, because some people have gone out of their way to start patronizing his store. Directions.

And this despite the fact the Phoenix is back in boxes along Centre Street again.

He's protesting a liquor store for being immoral, not for selling alcohol, but have a newspaper on the premises?

Well, I guess we've come a long from prohibition, I'll admit that.

Why don't some of them show up in bikinis and counterprotest? That would be a shitshow.

I saw the Phoenix this morning in a box outside Starbucks on the Roche Brother's sidewalk. I was totally psyched and couldn't wait to get home and do a little more Bob Joyce smearing and thanking of whomever had the box put up. You beat me to it though, Adam (as usual). I may just have to swing by Gary's tomorrow wearing one of my Liberal shirts and carrying my 3-year old. Too bad I already picked up a copy of the paper... I could have had the 3-yo carry it out for me. Hmmm... I guess I can always use two copies... :)

Look for me with my daughter (unless she decides to stay in the car); we have to sorta head that way (well, Kohl's down in Walpole) anyway to pick up some leggings for her (for dance class, not because she's become one of those leggings girls). I'm aiming for around 1.

I'll shoot for around the same timeframe. Hopefully I'll see you guys there!

I'M SO IN! I think I'll wear my naked lady bowling shirt, it is after Easter so I think it's okay. I live about 100 yards from Gary's, I wish I had my old water balloon launcher...I was deadly with that thing back in the day.

Wearing it before easter would be a fashion faux pas and wearing it on good friday could be a mortal sin.

Are you really going to launch water ballons. Be careful you don't get busted for assualt.

No water balloon launching tomorrow, my skills have eroded terribly and I can't hit the strike zone anymore. Besides, I actually respect peoples right to assemble and make complete jackasses of themselves.

Bob Joyce's plan to picket
By Gary (not verified) | Thu, 03/13/2008 - 6:34pm

Joyce has so ever politely informed me that he will be picketing on the sidewalk next to the VFW Parkway on March 29, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 5:30 pm. By the way, the Post Office on Center St. has put the Phoenix box back outside again. Regardless of how many times, or how long Joyce wants to picket, I WILL NEVER, EVER give in to him!

The link says the store is in Chestnut Hill, not West Roxbury.

Can we just get the address and be big boys and girl with Google Maps? :-)

Yes, that mall considers itself to be in "Chestnut Hill," unlike the Harvard-Vanguard center right across the street, which is not afraid to admit it sits in lowly West Roxbury.

In any case, 655 VFW Parkway, Google-ized.

I am proud to admit my store and the mall are located in West Roxbury, but our mailing address is chestnut hill. It is a postal designation, and if you use West Roxbury as our mailing address it takes an extra week or so for the mail to get through. I grew up in West Roxbury, and am very proud of that!

Aha! As a former resident of a part of Brighton served by the Brookline post office, I now understand.

It is both Chestnut Hill AND West Roxbury. Chestnut Hill encompasses parts of West Roxbury, Brighton, Newton, and Brookline. It is a village, not a city, town, or township, or anything with any government.

665 VFW Parkway.

And Bob Joyce is a fool.

Sounds like the dimension I go to if I say my name backwards.

Oddly enough, I was wondering where I should go today to purchase some fine beverages to watch some college basketball with a friend. I think I just might go out of my way to visit Gary now.

I went over to Gary's to buy to buy a case of wine in solidarity, and the picketers seemed pretty sad and clueless. Because the sidewalk in front of Gary's is on the strip plaza, and thus private property, they had to picket out by the parkway. And what a weary, dreary crew. It looked like Joyce swung by the old folks home and promised to pay for an early bird special. They carried signs printed in a typeface small enough to be illegible unless you were stopped right in front of them. There were two police details keeping an eye on Joyce and his geriatric minions, one in a, er, suspect transport wagon, and a second at the other end of the parking lot.

It's a good thing they were there. Somebody might have fallen into a gaping maw of idiocy.

There were eight cops there (I think you summed up the protest a lot better than I did).
