Remodelation

Roving reporter Mike Ball noticed that the best-named pizza place in all of Boston - yes, the Piece of Pizza in Cleary Square - is closed for some kind of work.

Will they still have "free" delivery when they re-open?

"Remodeling" or "Renovations" is often restaurant-speak for "We're closed forever".

Remodeling & renovations, sure, but Remodelation??? That is definitely code for integrating more awesome.

I wonder what key they're remodelating into.

In Nashua, a Burger King has a sign that says it's closed for remodeling. Last I checked, it was razed to the ground. Now THAT's remodelation!

This is a very awkwardly written sign. Shouldn't it say "Closed?" Unless the "for" was supposed to be "to," implying that the sign was nearby "remodelation," which I don't think is even a word. Wow. I just confused myself.

Mamma Mia's was owned by a tall guy, his wife, and his daughters until around 2002 or so. Their hot (capicola) ham and cheese atomic subs were excellent and well worth the price. The great thing is that they never changed the phone number, which was easy to dial (364-1113) before the conversion to ten digit dialling.

The owner sold it to another interest, who turned it into Piece of Pizza, and then the hybird pizza/burrito shop Burro's. I have the feeling that the "remodelation" will result in another generic take-out shop, or maybe an expansion of old Larry's News (now Izmarry's convenience).

There's a brand-new convenience store like four doors down, so new it just has a "now open" banner and no sign, and I was in a hurry, so I couldn't tell if there are now four convenience stores within three blocks of each other (that place, Izmarry's, the old Tedeschi and the new Tedeschi), or if Izmarry is just moving down a few doors.

Meanwhile, I see that CF Donovan's is attempting to prove wrong those naysayers who think they won't be open this century: They've pasted up an address on one of their doors (and hi, ho, Ron's Gourmet Ice Cream has a bright new green sign that could be used to scare little kids, I think).

That new convenience store is owned by the people who own Brennan's - my guess is that they're going to run both stores under seperate ownership or consolidate the shoebox that Brennan's is into this newer store. Izmarry's (nee Larry's News) is a seperate entity, but can't sell lottery tickets - they got caught selling to minors some time ago and haven't got their license back. Izmarry's is going nowhere, as far as I know.

As for CF Donovan's - it looks like all that long construction will finally pay off and the restaurant will open.

Q Audio, on the corner of Mass Ave and Vassar in Cambridge, has a sign up that they are still open during "constraction", which I believe is a portmanteau of construction and distraction.

I prefer to see it as the perfect term for downsizing a business's footprint. "Construction" + "Contraction".
