Asian grocery stores typically have loose leaf green tea in bulk.

Is the best I've had anywhere. Not sure of who sells it--Cityfeed in JP carries it.

Virtuous Teas in Newton is a good spot for loose tea

I don't comment here often, but had to say that Upton Tea (uptontea.com) is by far the best place to buy tea - selection, quality, price, service are all A+. The website and catalog aren't models of design, but if you can get past that (and be a little patient sorting through the hundreds of varieties they sell), you will be richly rewarded. Even though it has to be shipped, they're local to us (Holliston) so it's fast - more than once I've received orders less than 24 hours after placing them.

I used to try to go to Tealuxe but they were always a little out of the way for me to get there and I never liked the sales tactics of teavana (their big anti-oxidant pitch is going to waste and I always felt that teas were either pushed or recommended based on the highest price point).

A friend turned me on to Upton and I haven't looked back. I order once every three months or so and love the service (I too have gotten orders to my door in a day if I order in the morning). My breakfast tea is a staple and then I mix & match some of the others to try out. I've had some great teas, some I thought were just good but I have yet to have a bad tea from them.

I third that. We've been loyal Upton shoppers for many years, and have followed them from Upton, to Hopkinton, and now to Holliston. Nice people, great service, fast shipping, and their newsletters/catalogs are always a good read (for the tea enthusiast, that is.) Reminds me that we've got to get another order in soon....

Depends on what he means by "loose leaf tea."

a local mail order company, Upton Tea Imports, has a great selection of teas: www.uptontea.com

Vote #4 for Upton - a kind-hearted staffer at Starbucks pointed me towards them shortly after Starbucks ate the Coffee Connection, which had carried a decent line of loose teas back in the day. I've been an Upton customer ever since. Their selection, quality, and prices are all amazing, and as others have said, since they're nearby their UPS shipments usually arrive the next day.

MEM teas are also good - I prefer their masala chai blend to anything that Upton offers. I buy it at Cardullo's on Harvard Square, but they sell at a number of places around the greater Boston area.

I was never much of a chai person but the Mem Mark's Chai converted me. I'll have to try Upton though, clearly.

I buy my loose leaf tea through Amazon. Tea is lightweight for its cost, making it ideal to buy online.

If you browse Grocery & Gourmet Food -> Beverages -> Tea

Then check the "Loose Leaf Tea" option. There are thousands of teas from hundreds of vendors. I'm a fan of Harney & Sons "Hot Cinnamon Spice". It tastes like atomic fireball candy in tea form.

I just get my loose tea at Cardullo's any time I'm in Harvard Square.

Dated but easy to use web site, great selection. They're in Hopkinton but most of the time shipments (USPS) gets to greater Boston area locations the next day, at least for the four locations I've lived since I started buying there.
