The turnpike is just so boring sometimes

Can you blame a Masshole for catching up with some reading?

Book-loving Masshole

Kevin Smith reports he was amazed when he looked out his window on the passenger side around noon today to see a guy reading a book - as he was doing about 70 on the eastbound turnpike by exit 13 in Natick. So, naturally, he took his photo.

Hopefully Kevin Smith was not operating a motor vehicle at the time he was snapping photos.

And hopefully he called 911 and gave a description of the vehicle and plate numbers.

Looks like he's about to veer over the rumble strip, too. I just can't fathom how people don't realize how unbelievably dangerous things like that are.

It's a cultural problem of Boston in general. Look at all the other grossly irresponsible driving behavior that is commonplace and socially-acceptable.

Half the drivers in Boston at least sometimes do things that are irresponsible enough to get them suspended from driving and forced to rely on the MBTA.

Were relying on the MBTA not cruel and unusual punishment.

Breakdown of society and infrastructure. It's not sustainable.

Is he wearing a kufi? Sporting a long beard? Reading the Koran facing east during Ramadan? Let's cut the guy some slack; he was probably just running late for morning prayer.

Yeah this guy looked like he might be a Muslim too. The skull cap and the book seemed like it might be a Koran. So to top it all off the guy probably isn't operating at top form anyway because he couldn't eat breakfast before going on the road.

Really? I hate that guy! Please tell me you got the plate and reported this ass clown before he kills someone!

Yes! Report him and then bitch that cops are profiling some poor Muslim guy! You guys are great.

I wouldn't think there's enough straw yet to build up such an elaborate strawman.

One is an ACLU maniac, the other is still having a 9/11 freakout. It's totally confusing.

for unregistered users. Adam should substitute their IP address.

Yes, I agree. Some way to differentiate the anons is needed.

I dont know if something like this is possible....but:

Take the ip address of the anon and assign it to an animal name for 1 week. So a certain IP address will appear as "Anonymous walrus" and another as "Anonymous hippo" etc

That's not a bad idea, if you do it with browser cookies, rather than IP addresses. IP addresses will not work for that purpose, for several different technical reasons.

BTW, I don't see a problem with anon posters on UH, and they often add useful info. I myself am anon because I am commitment-averse and don't know where this relationship is going. If we formalize the relationship with an account, that means I'm always having to log in, and I start feeling suffocated. Pretty soon, I'm logged in all day at work, like a regular, and I start actually caring about all the interpersonal drama between various regulars. Why can't we just hook up and enjoy the comment for itself, no strings attached.

Here's an idea: when an anon is appears to be trying to make a useful contribution, at least you can be sure they're not just grandstanding to promote their reputation or their blog.

every time you want to post a message or a reply. I find my log-in lasts for between three and four days before I have to log in again.

Yes, thats why I think assigning a temp name is better because a lot of people dont like to regsiter for whatever reason.

IP address, cookies, I dont know, Im not good with computers. I just think that if the database see address x sending a comment, it can assign it a temp name. That way, we can know if theres one anon in a conversation or 7 different ones.

i commute about 25 miles each way everyday. every single day i see at least one person texting. they are usually floating in and out of their lane. my biggest thing is to just get by them and get where im going safely but it is really getting out of hand. one day last winter i saw one of those rcn vans weaving around and i pulled up next to it and sure enough the woman was texting. instead of just passing i picked up my phone and snapped a picture. when she saw me do this she became very aggressive and sped up to let me know she was unhappy. i called her company and asked what their policy was regarding cell phones and they told me that they had a zero tolerance policy. i had a picture of the van, with the van number and the driver clearly texting( normally i would not be taking pictures while driving but in this case i thought i should). the woman i spoke to was very nice and asked me for the plate number or bus number. this is when i choked. as bad as it was i just couldnt turn her in and have her lose her job because i made the phonecall. i told the woman on the phone which road i was on and that she should remind any drivers who may be on this road at this hour of their zero tolerance policy.i guess im a wimp because i know if i had a child on that bus i would want her fired but i just couldnt do it.

what is the current status of the bill that would put restrictions on using hand held devices while driving?

We have 10% unemployment. If she doesn't wish to follow the rules of her job, there are dozens of people who will.

if it happend today id probably give her up but this was when the economy was crashing and people were getting laid off all over the place. it felt like bad karma to have her fired. ive been looking for her ever since and ive never seen her again. maybe she got caught by someone else.

The economy is still crashing. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

If you didn't want to get the driver in trouble, but still have an impact, edit the bus number and face out of the photo and post it on the Web or send it to the Globe, identifying the company.

You have to give a company bad PR or really scare them with how close they are to a huge liability before there's any hope that they'll scare bad employees into good behavior.

If you had taken a picture of the plate as well, and forwarded it to various agencies it might have resulted in a ticket. It's rare, but it happens.

Undoubtedly, the book was "Unsafe at Any Speed."

This is just a physical demonstration of the lack of attention many people bring to the immediate task of operating heavy, fast-moving machinery in brainy Boston. And yes, I am jealous of other people's braininess.
