Justice in the burrito line

Somebody really needed a smackdown at an unidentified Boston burrito joint. He got one.

I just don't believe this story.

I have definitely seen stranger things in Boston food joints and convenience stores.

Even a dishonest, rude, cruel, entitled, impatient, racist, bullying, xenophobic coward like this guy would have to be pretty drunk to publicly direct racial slurs at a restaurant employee. The whole line would be ready to knock him out. Of course, I'm picturing someone like Christian Bale in the "Shaft" remake, not like DeNiro in "Being Flynn"- I can't help but wonder what the bad customer looked like.

Who the F uses that word? Especially in the northeast. I also question this tale. The cowering super polite 'Hispanic' employees, the 'young white woman' who comes to their rescue, the cop who threatens the guy and uses foul language...this tale doesn't sound kosher to me.

Just saying.

It's usually directed at me. Also popular is "Go back to your own country"
"Go take a Fucking shower"
"Brush those fucking beaner teeth"
and the ever so popular
"Spic!"

You'd be amazed how much racism you can experience around the right people. I've heard it my whole life, and now just laugh at it.

The words 'wetback' and 'beaner' are practically unknown in Boston, even NYC. Traditionally, most 'Hispanics' come from the Caribbean in the northeast, not Mexico. Even now most Central Americans here aren't Mexican. 'Beaner' and 'wetback' is a southwest California/Texas thing.

If anyone were to call you a racist slur it would be the 4 letter S-word. But I just highly doubt that would be a common occurrence.

I think this story is made up of exaggerated.

... a truly sheltered suburban white boy.

How dare you.

I am indeed a 'white boy', but grew up in the INNER CITY of NYC [Da Bronx] and Boston [JP, Allston and Slumerville ... yes, I know it's technically not Boston]. I've NEVER lived in a rural area, small town or suburb IN MY LIFE; I've always lived in big cities. And YES, I've traveled and even lived outside the U.S. Does that cover it? Are my street creds good enough for you?

And why do people like you always assume all 'white boys' or 'white girls' come from suburbia and / or are 'privileged'?

A well-traveled city dweller from the Bronx would probably know that (a) Boston is not a "big city" and (b) JP & Allston don't quite make the cut as "inner city".

1) Boston and metro Boston is big, one of the top 10 in America. NYC is in a class by itself, of course, but Boston is comparable to places like DC, S.F., etc.

2) YES, ALLSTON is most certainly 'inner city', as is JP. I didn't live in JP when it was 'gentrified',either. 'Inner city' is a P.C. term that usually implies the 'ghetto' where all the oppressed minorities live, in reality it's simply inside the city limits, as opposed to the suburbs.

That's the best you can do? Boston is full of [mostly] suburban and small town college kids and yuppies like you who hate it here; why not just move to someplace that meets your standards better than this hick town? Of course I assume you're living around here and not someplace like big, bad, scary NY. Try The Bronx. It sucks even more than Boston.

Even Moss Hill?

Is Roslindale inner city too?

what you think it does.

That would be North End, South End, Chinatown, Beacon Hill, Back Bay, Bay Village, maybe also Fenway and Kenmore Square.

JP? Allston? Somerville? Not so much.

Metro Boston (Cambridge, Boston, Quincy, Watertown, Somerville, Arlington, Brookline, Newton, etc, etc) has one of the top 10 populations in the country.

The actual City of Boston is a medium/large sized city with regards to numbers. When it comes to real life, we're like a small town.

wetback is a pretty universal slur that many people across the country would be familiar with.

I'm from NYC and Boston and the first time I ever really became familiar with it was when I lived in LA for 10 months, and even then it's RARELY used except by Latino 'advocates' to show how horrible and racist 'whites' are. I believe it's a very old fashioned slur, actually. If any slur directed against this person because they were perceived to be 'Hispanic' were used, it would have been the 4 letter S-word.

I'm white' but grew up mostly in 'Hispanic' neighborhoods. I never had any problems with so-called 'Hispanics', Puerto Rican, Dominican, whatever. Neither did any of my 'white' friends, and we actually hung out with 'Hispanic' kids. I'll say I noticed more tension on the west coast where Mexicans predominate, but even there there really isn't much white/Hispanic tension. There's a lot more Hispanic/Black tension, actually.

For awhile I lived in an apartment behind Angell Memorial and the tensions there were all 'Hispanic' from this island vs 'Hispanic' from that island. Being White, I was completely left out of it and comparatively safe.

Anyone that hasn't heard "wetback" as a racial slur has lived a very sheltered life. Regardless of whether the guy using it was native to the northeast or not, it's certainly not out of the ordinary for racist trash to use that term. In my mind, his use of a that particular slur is the least surprising part of the story. By all means though, keep insisting you have a lock on which slurs are out of date.

Wake up!

I've never heard of it. So it must be made up. I'm white and I've never had anybody call me that. If people called people like that those kinds of names, I'm SURE my friends would tell me - so I could tell them that I've NEVER heard anybody do that and pat them on the head.

Because, you know, "it never happened to me" and "it never happened that I've seen" are the EXACT SAME THING as "people NEVER do this and it NEVER happened".

You can't imagine someone using a racial slur in the northeast?

Wake up!

I NEVER said that. There are racist and bigoted blacks, whites, 'Hispanics', Asians, gays, etc. everywhere, including here. Is it bad here? No, which is why we have such a diverse population, unlike most southern cities [for example] which are little more than majority black. Now they're starting to get a substantial 'Hispanic' population, and whites are moving back into the cities.

I find it amusing someone would complain about how racist Boston and MA is when we have a black governor, a 'progressive' senator, a moderate to liberal Republican senator [by national standards], gay marriage since 2004, and statistically a very ethnically and racially diverse population, including one of the largest Jewish populations in the world, not just the U.S.

What I found unusual with this story is the slurs used. They simply aren't commonly used in the northeast because we traditionally haven't had really any Mexican [and until only recently Central American] immigrant population, most 'Hispanics' here, traditionally, have been P.R. and Dominican.

Of course the 'bigot' who said these things could have been from the southwest U.S., not from the northeast.

I am awake, boss. What have I said that is inaccurate? Have I posted something that is untrue?

You have a few black/hispanic friends, too.

grow up. You don't know me and are making goofy inaccurate assertions based on your own biases, which you lecture others about having. Project much?

*You* are the one who assumed that young and female = white.

That starts with a "d"?

I would think it could be "dick" but they use it as an adjective before the words "burrito" and "wetback".
