Citizen complaint of the day: Biker boys on Washington Street in the South End

An aggrieved citizen complains:

It's like biker boys or 2fastfurious on Washington st every Sunday. Mopeds, quads, dirt bikes, face masks and zero helmets. How is this always going on so close to the D4 police station. There MUST be warrants out for some of these punks.

There MUST be some underlying racism in that complaint.

But counter argument - people who blatantly disregard public safety and traffic laws to joy ride around are probably more likely to have had run ins with the law than other people.

These are a-holes regardless of race, creed or color..

your comment and title line come on pretty strong, but I feel I need you to spell out exactly what you are interpreting as racism. My perception is that the post writer was finding the behavior to be obnoxious and punky and made no connections to anything racial/ethnic/socio-economic etc. But I'd be interested in hearing further in how you interpreted it.

Racism is everywhere if you look hard enough for it

Way to read into things. The complainant said there were "punks" racing motorcycles around the neighborhood. Nothing about what color those "punks" are. The complainant also inferred that if there were punks already breaking the law by riding without helmets, there also might be a few that are wanted. Not a huge stretch...

They did such a good job focusing on the inappropriate and illegal behavior that you can't find it!

It just wasn't there. Imagine that, someone that thinks lawbreakers may have broken the law in the past....regardless of color. Nah, can't exist, they must be racist and just really good at hiding it.

I think that was her point.

Because I have--in Dorchester, Roxbury, JP--and there is no question that their behavior is wildly illegal and dangerous. We're not talking about a happy pack of joyriding kids--they're riding at insane speeds on dirt bikes and souped-up mopeds because they know that they're virtually unstoppable. IMO it's only a matter of time before someone's killed.

almost got broadsided by 4-6 of these jackasses one night when I had the green light and they blew through their red doing wheelies, etc on dirt bikes. Where do they even get dirt bikes from anyway?

Last Sunday, I driving down Columbia Rd on my way to downtown crossing. In the intersection of Dudley St. and Columbia Rd. were about 60 young people on bikes. I wondered what they were up to. The answer came when I was sitting in a restaurant in downtown crossing and saw a large group of kids on bikes pass by. Had to be the same group.

At first, I thought it was pretty cool to have all those kids organize such a ride. Then I saw the disruptions they were causing, including spitting on cars.

How dare they!

Yes, packs of bicyclists going around spitting on cars is kind of a d*ckhead'y thing to do.

I can only hope someone gets out of their car and makes the kid spit out his teeth like a pack of Chiclets instead.

... a true masshole who will, from their car:

- spit out the window whenever, sometimes on people walking
- throw trash, including half-full dunks cups, out the window, sometimes hitting people and other vehicles
- fling lit cigarettes out the window, injuring people, starting fires, littering

Being in a CAR makes that all okay!

Kids on bikes spitting on inanimate objects is far worse!

No, I don't do those things actually. Anything else?

I was on Newbury St between Dartmouth and Exeter last weekend and there were around 20 of them wearing face masks, no helmets, riding dirt bikes and quad ATVs weaving in and out of cars and blowing red lights all while riding wheelies. Then I saw them again on East Berkeley in the South end near Washington. I saw them again yesterday riding on Dot Ave heading from Andrew towards Columbia Rd.

Is this just allowed at this point? There was zero police presence during or following any of these shows.

I've also noticed younger kids on bicycles doing the same thing, blocking traffic and riding wheelies in and around traffic.

It's like Gotham from Batman and Robin except less organized and less safe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hki1jk1MMLM
