Back Bay state rep to run for vacant state-senate seat

Livingstone

State Rep. Jay Livingstone (D-Back Bay) announced last night he's running for the 1st Suffolk and Middlesex senate seat being vacated by Anthony Petruccelli.

His announcement came only hours after neighboring state Rep. Aaron Michlewitz (D-North End) announced he wasn't going to run for the seat.

Livingstone said he believes in the role of government to improve people's lives. He points to his work to secure more funding for early education and drug treatment and to advance gun safety. He says he's also worked to pass increases in the minimum wage and to ensure women earn the same as men.

Sometimes people can become cynical about government, but I know firsthand the profound role that effective leadership can play in helping communities and residents thrive. That's what I’ve been able to do in the House, and that's why I am running for State Senate.

Any Republicans running for the seat or do they not exist there?

I'm going to vote for the person I agree with most. I don't care about their color, gender, sexual preference, birthplace, political affiliation...the list can go on and on. This business of just voting for one political party's candidate has always boggled me.

in larger elections that impact things on a national level it is pretty easy to determine a significant amount of a candidate's viewpoints based on their party.

you can't really stray far from the party line necessarily- which is why you have things like trump saying if need be, he will leave the GOP. so its basically a way to lump people together.

oh and, lol, speaking of which, lets not try to lump democrats/republicans in with federally protected classes and pretend like its the same thing.

The number of people in MA which are supposedly (I) but have never voted anything but (D) in their entire lives says otherwise.

We don't have (I) in Massachusetts, we have unenrolled.

Of course there are Republicans there. They just have a (D) next to their name too.

His transportation policy was something along the lines of "cheap tolls for residents of Eastie."

As a soon-to-be-former constituent of Petruccelli's, it would be nice to have Senate representation who actually gave a rip about constituents. I've sent at least half a dozen emails in the past couple of years to Petruccelli's office about a variety of issues, and nearly every one was also sent to Jay Livingstone. Jay always responds. Petruccelli never has.

He'll do well as a lobbyist.

Yet another ad hoc special election will be held to fill to the vacancy for 10 months. Frank Baker proposed extended city council terms from 2 years to 4 years, reportedly just to spare the city the costs of running elections. If you really want to save money, come up with a lower overhead process to fill these mid-term vacancies than holding a special primary and general in the middle of the year.

... then run the municipal elections in even numbered years along with the Federal and State elections, thereby cutting the cost of running elections in half.

But that would increase turnout, and good turnout is bad for the machine .... ;-(
