'Imagine having a building the size of Holyoke Center in your back yard'

The Crimson reports some East Cambridge residents are not taking kindly to the idea of having a 10-story research building built 50 feet from their property lines.

Drivers have needs, too

Christine Murphy watched a report last night on that State House bake sale/protest for the MBTA and she got mad - although not the way the organizers would hope. Murphy explains how she wants to ride the T, but can't, because the Orange Line is just too unreliable and that increases in the gas tax should be going to fix the state's potholed roads:

... What the gas tax hike needs to be paying for is stuff like fixing all of the damned potholes. You can't drive anywhere around here without hitting one. The pothole problem has gotten even worse this year, due to more cold and snow than usual this winter. So if we drivers must be taxed, use the money for that ... why tax us to pay for [the T] that we won't use, and then make us pay for new tires because we hit potholes that had not been fixed in years? It just isn't right.

Even if the gas tax hike passes, and the T gets its six cents on the gallon, don't look for any improvements any time soon. The service will still suck, they will still be doing the never-ending work between Wellington and Oak Grove, the buses and trains will still be dirty and skeevy, and won't run on time. ...

The Outraged Liberal, though, thinks the MBTA Riders Union was onto something with its baked goods:

[T]he timing got me to thinking -- particularly after I rode an MBTA bus so dirty that it was impossible to see out the window.

Maybe we are going about this all wrong. Maybe we can all chip and help the T hold a bus wash -- proceeds going to knock down the fare increases being threatened unless the Legislature does something, anything to deal with the transportation infrastructure nightmare this state faces.

Or maybe we can go out to the barn and put on a show. It would still be more than lawmakers have accomplished. Other than running their mouths on why the don't like Patrick's proposal.

'60s-themed diner planned for Downtown Crossing

The Herald reported Friday that a 225-seat 1960s-themed diner is planned for Downtown Crossing.

The ubiquitous sources with no names say the restaurant will be in the ground floor of a Suffolk University-owned building.

A restaurant planned for a year out wouldn't be such news, except for the Downtown Crossing angle.

Police seek man who yelled candy at a crowded playground

Boston Police report they are looking for a guy who approached the playground of the Curtis Guild Elementary School on Leyden Street in East Boston last Thursday afternoon and started yelling "candy candy!"

This behavior frightened the children who then ran and told school personnel. The suspect then fled down Blackington Street towards Bennington Street.

He's described as a white male in his 40s with a black mustache and a gold stud earring, about 5'10" and wearing black boots, blue jeans, gray sweater, white jacket and a gray knit cap. He was driving a blue van with a sunroof.

Boston Police jump on Twitter

Check this out. It's how I know there was a crash, with injuries, involving an MBTA bus at Park and Washington streets in Dorchester and a fire at 30 Pleasant St., also in Dorchester, this afternoon.

Unemployment Phone Lines

Everyone hears how frustrating the phone lines are for the Department of Unemployment Assistance but I don't think those who have not experienced it truly get how needlessly frustrating it is. You can read more about my experience over at DaveWrites (and listen to the call for yourself!). After navigating through a series of choices, callers "dead-end" at a point where they are told the DUA is overwhelmed and cannot answer their phone. Then the line drops, forcing the caller to repeat the process over and over until they are put in a 40-minute hold queue. Note: I know it is illegal to record a phone conversation without permission of both parties in MA. My blog contains a link to a recording of the preliminary steps I took trying to navigate the phone maze. I did not record a "conversation" because no one ever answered.
