Winner of fatal fight pleads guilty to manslaughter

Victor Rosario, who managed to beat a man to death despite being shot in the chest himself, today pleaded guilty to the April 23, 2007 death of Frank Dillon on Marion Street in East Boston, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office announced.

Rosario was sentenced to eight to ten at MCI Cedar Junction.

According to the DA's office:

Had the case proceeded to trial, Assistant District Attorney David Fredette would have introduced evidence and testimony to prove that Dillon, Rosario, and an unidentified third party became engaged in a violent, armed altercation at 44 Marion St. In the course of that altercation, Rosario sustained a gunshot wound to his chest.

Evidence would have shown that Rosario and another man whose identity remains unknown beat Dillon with their fists and feet while dragging him from the building. Prosecutors alleged that Rosario further beat Dillon with a baseball bat and another blunt implement.

Boston Police who responded to Marion Street found Dillon on the sidewalk and Rosario on top of a car, with both men suffering from serious injuries. A broken meat cleaver, a handgun, and several beer bottles were recovered from the area; a baseball bat stained with Dillon's blood was recovered from Rosario's apartment.

Dillon died several days later from his injuries.

As if you needed another reason to hate Tim McCarver and Joe Buck

The U.S. Marshal for Boston and a federal lawyer improperly arranged government motorcades for the two Fox blabcasters during the 2007 World Series, according to a report by the Justice Department's inspector general.

The report centers on Joseph Band, an attorney for the U.S. Marshal's office in Washington:

Our investigation revealed that Band attended the 2007 World Series games as a paid, part-time sports statistician for Fox Sports, and arranged transportation from both games in an USMS vehicle for himself and for a Fox Sports colleague from one game. In addition, the OIG determined that Band arranged a USMS motorcade escort for the broadcasters' private limousines from Fenway Park following both games. We concluded that Band's conduct violated the standards of ethical conduct for federal employees and USMS policy governing the use of government vehicles.

Yvonne Bronner, acting U.S. Marshal for Boston, assigned deputy marshals to help Band in his Fox work at the two Boston games, the report says.

Oh, but wait, there's more: Seems Band got similar escort treatment at the 2008 Super Bowl, an NFL playoff game in Tampa and a college bowl game in Phoenix in 2007. However, the report says the U.S. Marshal in San Francisco refused to let Band get a motorcade to the 2007 All-Star game in that city.

The report concludes that the U.S. Attorney's office in Boston declined to bring any criminal charges.

No longer a Gil Santos fan

NotErnie notes Gil Santos's retirement from WBZ, wishes he would retire from Patriots games as well:

... In the last few years, I have become increasingly frustrated at his inability to correctly name the down, distance or where on the field the ball is even marked. He's got a great voice and when he gets things right, he's tremendous. But he gets too much wrong. ...

If $100,000 is enough to keep you running for mayor, how much would get you to run for city council?

KenneallySam Yoon raised his $100,000 (and then some). Now comes Andrew Kenneally, who reports raising $11,675 in three weeks as he considers whether to run for an at-large city council seat. A press release from his nascent campaign says:

Kenneally's broad support comes from individuals from all sections of the city, as well as, organized labor.

Well, actually, it comes from out of town, too: 57% of the contributions are from non-Boston residents.

A West Roxbury native who now lives in East Boston, Kenneally has spent five years immersing himself in city affairs, first as chief of staff for Councilor Maura Hennigan, then as director of police and communications for Councilor Michael Flaherty.

Kenneally's contribution list (CSV file).

Local blogger goes over to the other side

Amy Derjue, late of Boston Magazine, is now City Councilor Mike Ross's communications director, Boston Magazine reports.

Hmm, if Ross runs for mayor against John Tobin (hey, it could happen), we'd have blog wars: She'd be competing with blogger Steve Garfield, who put together Tobin's campaign site.

Snow brings out the worst in people

The Avenger discusses her neighbors, one of whom had "Asshole" keyed into her car when she parked in a shoveled, but unclaimed spot, another of whom refuses to shovel his walk:

... After the snow packs down due to foot traffic it turns to ice. I nearly died there one day so I took it upon myself. I wrote on an envelope " Shovel please" and strategically placed it. I should have known, the note never disappeared and no shoveling happened. How people can be so ignorant stuns me. They take the time to shovel a spot and leave their sidewalk shear ice. ...
