Today's least likely to actually be true boston.com headline

Eastie loves Readville?

Eagle-eyed Ron Newman, who actually scrolls all the way down the boston.com homepage, noticed this link today, perhaps written by somebody with even less of a grasp on actual Boston geography than I have.

Roslindale to get sub chain outlet; Dedham to get Chinese-food chain outlet

A Subway sub shop will be opening up in Roslindale Square's first new building in forever, on Washington Street. Further south, Panda Express is replacing a shuttered wine shop between the Stop & Shop and Five Guys; good news for people getting bored with the IHOP and Chipotle.

Warning signs

Complaining to the Mayor's Hotline gets results. Roving UHub photographer Sean Connor forwarded this photo today of the excessively hot manhole covers on Harrison Avenue, a day after somebody complained one had burned his or her pet's paws.

DA: Readville man shot repeatedly in feud between two Roxbury gangs

HallHallJavann Hall of Dorchester was arraigned today on charges he acted as the driver for a gunman who blasted away at a Readville man about to get his todller out of the car Saturday night.

Suffolk County Assistant District Attorney Mark Lee estimated the victim was hit eight or nine times by bullets as he and his girlfriend stood outside their apartment on Millstone Street, in one of the city's most remote, quietest areas. Lee told West Roxbury District Court Judge Kathleen Coffey that while the victim is expected to survive, he is still in bad enough shape that officials are still not sure exactly how many times he was shot.

Lee said authorities have identified the shooter but have yet to arrest him.

Lee said the victim is an associate of the H Block gang from the Humboldt Avenue area of Roxbury and that the shooter is a member of a gang associated with the Orchard Park project, and that the shooting arose from "an ongoing feud" between the two groups. He said the feuding is taking place "in sort of a larger setting," which he declined to discuss.

Nonsense, Hall's attorney, William Tobin said. Hall, 26, he said, denied any involvement. Tobin said Hall is a Madison Park High School graduate working as a salesman for Just Energy of Chelsea - and volunteering as a mentor for Boston's Street Safe program to try to steer kids away from violence. One Street Safe counselor attended Hall's arraignment to show his support.

Lee said the victim and his girlfriend were unloading their car - their 18-month-old toddler still inside - when the gunman walked up and started shooting. Hall, he said, then drove up, the shooter got in and they sped off.

Lee asked for bail of $1 million. Coffey set bail at $75,000.

Innocent, etc.

The new bostonglobe.com is here

My first impression: Nice. No more eye strain, no more need to kill all those zombie popups, no more waiting forever while the site builds all those popups. Huzzah!

It's a much more leisurely approach to the news; the kind of thing that harkens back to the old days, when people actually settled down with a cup of coffee and the morning paper. The kind of thing you'd expect to see in an ad for a iPad, if those ads showed people reading the iGlobe on the way to work on the iRed Line.

Is it worth $3.99 a week (what they'll start charging Oct. 1)? Hard for me to say, since we already get the Sunday paper, which includes online access (for only $3.50 a week; go figure). What do you think?

Couple of nits: My password didn't seem to work, but instead of just giving me a box to enter my e-mail address for a replacement, it invited me to chat with somebody. No. I hate chatting; that's why I'm a semi-hermit. Just give me a box to enter my address, please (Steve Garfield actually investigates; finds an answer, sort of).

The related story links at the bottom of stories aren't particularly related - all the metro stories had a link to a story about the death of some former Paraguayan strongman. And while it's nice to let stories breathe, all those links at the bottom of each story are huge and have tons of white space, which makes you have to scroll repeatedly to see them all. Seems kind of dumb. Also, will be interesting to see if the Globies actually start embedding links in stories, since it seems like all their links are black, which works fine in a box that's obviously a menu but not in a story made up of black text. The "Save" thing that pops up everywhere is annoying, at least to those of us who know how to use bookmarks.

More important stuff: Where's the breaking news, the stuff that's happening right now, too late to make it into the dead-trees edition? Am I going to have to click over to boston.com for that?

For the Web geeks, Joshua Benton explains some of the technology behind the new site. Dan Kennedy explains how all that geeky stuff will let the Globe save on the 30% cut Apple would want to hawk the thing in its store (and let the Globe keep full control of subscriber data).
