Shaw's sword snapped, snatched; suspect stopped, sword salvaged

UPDATE: Delvin Dixon, 40, of Charlestown, was arraigned on a charge of vandalism this afternoon. He was released on personal recognizance, but ordered to stay away from the Common until his case is resolved, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.

Somebody with a less than reverential view towards the past - not to mention Matthew Broderick - snapped off Robert Gould Shaw's sword from the 54th Massachusetts memorial across from the State House this morning.

The alleged miscreant, however, proved no match for the local constabulary, whose officers quickly found both him and the remains of the sword nearby on the Common.

Worked on Denzel in the movie despite Cary's objections.

That's the same one someone throw paint on a year or so ago. Hopefully it can be fixed.

Apparently this has happened several times before. Last I could verify was in 2010.

Enough so that the sword is now actually made of fiberglass or rubber, painted to look like metal.

You need a watery tart to throw the sword at you.

King Arthur: The Lady of the Lake, her arm clad in the purest shimmering samite, held aloft Excalibur from the bosom of the water signifying by Divine Providence that I, Arthur, was to carry Excalibur. That is why I am your king!

Dennis: Listen. Strange women lying in ponds, distributing swords, is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony!

King Arthur: Be quiet!

Dennis: You can't expect to wield supreme power just 'cause some watery tart threw a sword at you!

King Arthur: Shut up!

Dennis: I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor, just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!

King Arthur: Shut up! Will you shut up?!

[Arthur grabs Dennis and shakes him.]

Dennis: Ah, now we see the violence inherent in the system!

It's been done with the Washington statue and theGlover statue.

The people who did this really need to be put in stocks on the Common.

I've known him since about 1994. He has a very long history of mental illness. Very sad.
