Winter arrives early in Boston

Weston salt piles

Matt Reed at WCVB was up before the crack of dawn this morning and reports:

For all of you playing local news bingo at home, first live shot of the season at a salt pile.

But also:

This report just in from Steve Timmins:

It's started. Salvation Army bell ringer spotted in commuter rail waiting area at North Station.

My metric is when Starbucks switches to red cups, red menu displays, and blood-of-christ flavored coffee. That happened 1-2 weeks ago.

Mine is when Dunks Changes the cups, which was about a week ago

Dunkin's holiday cups are pink, the new non-Christmas Christmas color.

Blood of Christ is more an Easter thing.

A spoiler alert.

And learning that local towns have already blown through their snowplowing budget, after dropping 42 inches of salt on the half-inch of wispy snow that fell overnight

Ugh, I saw the Salvation Army bell ringers inside North Station this morning too.

It was bad enough having them right outside the station in past years. They do not belong inside!

the North Station commuter rail waiting area for several years now. They normally have one inside North Station subway as well, and used to have a third one at the street entrance as well.

And I agree, it's way too early for Christmas stuff. Sad that society increasingly tolerates this nonsense.

The Christmas season normally doesn't start until the day after Thanksgiving. It should be kept that way.

Thanksgiving and the day after. When they reopened on Saturday, their stores were fully decorated for Christmas.

And everyone made enough money without "Black Friday" or other such nonsense.

I can't ever remember them closing the day after Thanksgiving. You must be hallucinating.

They did all this on Blue Law Sunday in years past.

The finale of the Macy's Thanksgiving parade is Santa.

Maybe the Christmas season used to start even later before retailers pushed to get everyone excited right after Thanksgiving.

The bell ringer was at South Station last week...but at least they're behind the timing of the grocery stores?

The Salvation Army bell ringers have the right to go inside and keep warm, too--no?

They should go to hell for the way they turn back gay veterans from their services and inject religious cultism into their "help".

I'm fine with them warming themselves up as long as they're not ringing and begging while they do it.

Given that they are a religious organization that discriminates against people who have few other options and requires religiousness for those that they aid, I think they should find a better way to fundraise that doesn't clog up public property.

Worth a read.

Bingo.

I actually wrote an email to the MBTA yesterday asking that they reconsider allowing a religious group like the Salvation Army solicit donations inside a public building. My problem is less with the bell ringing (though that's going to be really obnoxious when waiting for a train) and more with the organization itself.

On the sidewalk is one thing, inside a station is another entirely.

The viewer almost has to feel sorry for forecasters as winter weather and potential record cold arrive right on schedule or even earlier than normal. The lack of cooperation from "warmth" shows why Global Warming had to be rebranded as "Climate Change" to cover all conditions. Their nervousness is palpable when they try to explain, "Except for the record cold, this is totally normal, climate change is still happening, no really." For those with the reflexive "climate isn't weather" rebuttal, why do they have the weathermen doing doomsday climate stories? It seems to present a terrible conflict trying to give a straight 3-day forecast after long range predictions of "The End of Snow" and "Endless Summer" fail to materialize. It will be interesting to watch the shifting goalposts, especially if we get more harsh winters leading up to 2030. What's the plan if we get Snowmaggedon 2030 after wasting trillions?

You can actually sing this post to the tune of Yakety Sax from the Benny Hill Show

if you picture every comment he posts as though it were drawn as a big cartoon speech bubble emanating from a rooster.

but here is a general vocabulary lesson:

cli·mate
/ˈklīmit/
noun
the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period.

weath·er
/ˈweT͟Hər/
noun
the state of the atmosphere at a place and time as regards heat, dryness, sunshine, wind, rain, etc.

Now that we cleared that up, you can stop falling back on this tired and moronic line of thinking.

Never mind that the polar winds have weakened due to the shrinking difference in temperatures between the pole and the equator, causing this to happen.

That's just science ... can't possibly be anything near as true or valid as WHAT FISHY BELIEVES!
