Blue Line chowderhead commandeers Blue Line intercom, lets his inner racist out

JK reported from car 0775 on an inbound Blue Line train at 10:03 p.m.:

Some chowderhead has commandeered the intercom. N words flying. Other bad language too.

At 10:12, he reported:

They got off at airport and started shutting off the escalators and elevators. Also more impolite language.

The T has recently seen similar intercom blatherings on the Red and Orange Lines.

How exactly are people getting access to the PA system on trains? What the hell is going on? I have been a daily rider of the T for over 40 years and never has this type of thing happened before. Why (and how) is it suddenly al the rage?

the MBTA is. If they can’t get a handle on this ongoing issue, I don’t even want to think about how unprepared they are for any major security incidents. What a joke.

To a certain extent, you’re correct about people. What a time to be alive, right?

But at the same time, the MBTA is the 4th largest public transit system in America, with a long history of mismanagement and a less than stellar track record when it comes to safety. To say it’s not their fault people keep finding their way into cabs and onto the PA system…I’m gonna have to respectfully disagree.

I keep reading about gangs of teenagers beating people up and rises in violent crime in general. I don't know why it should be happening.

It may feel that way every time we hear about some disturbing incidents but it's not necessarily through overall in Boston.

I’m guessing the doors aren’t unlocked so they either have a key or are prying open the door. If they are prying it open there’s got to be a fair amount of damage.

...it does seem concerning that they were able to get in there. I have no idea what's in those cabs, but I am sure there's a lot more mischief they could get up to than letting their treason flag fly over the intercom.

They could certainly damage the train controls but the system is designed such that they so couldn’t operate the train unless in the lead car. They could probably hit an emergency stop but you don’t need to be in the cab to do that.

It makes sense the intercom stays active in case the T wanted to have a separate conductor and operator like NYC.

The T will probably respond by taking a few years and spending millions to design some sort of lock out system for the intercom by which time kids will have found something else to screw with.

But aren’t the doors designed with an always closed latch where the skeleton key acts as the doorknob? I thought they couldn’t be left unlocked as doing so would have the door be flapping around. (Maybe that’s just green/red lines?)

The latch could be broken or the door not slammed shut.

I think if I found an open cab I’d just enjoy looking at the controls up close.

I don't know much about trains. That sounds like the way it should be designed, though, and a broken latch sounds about right for the MBTA.

I've seen the door on the other end of the car - the one that leads to the next car - open on the Red Line quite a few times.

There was a period a few years ago that it was a pretty regular thing on the first car on 6 am out of Ashmont, for a few months. The door would fly open in between stations.

As that is an obvious safety issue that was happening repeatedly (and maybe still is?? I sit in another car now), I have no trouble believing a few cab doors being unlocked!

Young men use that word in a non racist way. Nothing indicates it was used in a derogatory manner.

are the intercom controls in the same lead car where the actually train controls (accelerator/brake/track switching/...) are located ?

This came up with the Red Line incident and the T's answer was that only the train controls in the first car are enabled, unlike the intercom.

Then again, Red Line trains weren't supposed to move if a door wasn't fully closed, so ...

The crime statistics may not reflect it, but if you take the train in the city or walk around in places where yoof gather, you should notice a definite uptick in antisocial behavior. If you haven't, maybe you should keep doing what you are doing.

When I say to people that I have noticed that there seems to be a lot more strange, dangerous and/or antisocial behavior these days, they say "we just hear about it more now", what with social media, Uhub and al. But that's not it. I am a personal witness to this changing behavior on my daily T commute. And I'm not sure if the man I saw in Downtown Crossing on Saturday with a live possum on his shoulder (really!) even counts. Compared to a lot of what's going on, that almost seems downright average.

I just yell at them (when out of range) to be VERY social with themselves in an intimate way. I encourage such sociability in antisocial types. It helps when the self- intimacy keeps their mouth occupied.
