Police tie six Roslindale shootings to single housing-project apartment

The Roslindale Transcript reports Boston police looking at the connections between the occupants of a unit at 65 Beechland St. and a spate of gang-related violence that has left nearby residents increasingly fearful.

The paper reports the occupants moved out of the apartment this week rather than wait for the Boston Housing Authority to evict them after a search of their apartment following Tuesday's double shooting on Beechland found drugs and a semi-automatic weapon. Three people were taken into custody following the Tuesday-afternoon shootings; however, no one has been charged yet.

The paper quotes a local police captain as saying the occupants also have connections both to January's triple shooting (in which one man died), following the funeral of a Dorchester gang member.

Unclear from the article is the remaining shooting. An alleged gangbanger from Dorchester and his 12-year-old brother were shot in January on Cornell Street.

In addition to these incidents, police report confiscating drugs and weapons at the project in recent weeks (as well as at the Cornell Street home).

Police have said gang members began showing up in Roslindale when the BHA moved tenants out of Dorchester's Franklin Hill complex for renovations.

Consider inviting area E5 police chief, experts from academic institutions on gang sociology and effective means of counter-acting gang activity and gun violence, activist religious leaders from Dorchester who have have had some success combating this problem, city councilor, state rep., and state senator.

We don't need to figure out how to solve it, we need to identify the methods that have worked best in the past and get committment from official resources to do it here.

Also, when gangbangers relocate they become someone else's problem. I hope area E-5 uses police communications to notify others cities and towns of these individuals involvment in crime-related activity such as illegal gun possession, possession of narcotics etc. Whereever these people choose to live is their business but having law enforcement aware of their presence can help that community if law enforcement chooses to introduce themselves to the new ersidents and welcome them to the neighborhood.

So long as it's Not In My BackYard, I'll be complacent.

Even if they boot the usual suspects in the process, and make sure any stray offspring don't tag along in the move, there are understudies just waiting to take a starring role a year or two down the line.

I've been noticing over the past five years that when the lights do down, Cleary Square has its share of shady and intimidating characters walking around in their fur hoodies, their oversized baseball caps (also noticing a new trend of floppy knit hats), clicking their tongues across their palates and talking on their cell phones. During the daytime, however, there aren't any problems, but the kids from the Rogers Middle School and Hyde Park High converge at Cleary Square as if it were a flashing beacon.

And I've also noticed a huge increase of gang-related graffiti everywhere in Hyde Park: for instance, the doctor's office near the Route 32 stop is chock full of little mementos and territory marking. The plastic blue seats on the MBTA buses are also littered with such enlightening bon mots as "Murderpan."

Hyde Park hasn't become less safe, nor has it become decidely "majority minority," but I walk home with more conviction and speed to get where I need to go.

Yes, I do remember the Papa Gino's holdup.

I've known the people who have worked there for many, many years, but I think it was an inexperienced crew that worked there that night, and they didn't know what hit them.

By less safe I assume you mean except for up and down River st. Guns do seem to go off near River st. And the Shaw's on Hyde Park ave is certainly majority minority when I shop there each week.

In addition, Bank of America and the three dollar stores within 50 feet of one another do a pretty good business.

I think River Street has been a kind of demarcation line seperating two distinct classes of people. West of River Street and Logan Square, and certainly over the RR bridge, it's mainly middle class of all stripes. East of Logan Square is where it starts to get a little sketchy, and right near the paper mill and Wood Avenue is where you might not want to wander around capriciously.

As for the majority minority living here: they don't bother me. It's the packs of roving troublemakers that make me look behind my shoulder.

Yep, new people move in and new people move out, leaving behind wounded or dead bodies just to make their little contribution to the neighborhood.

TWO GUNS RECOVERED IN ROXBURY

At about 1:07am, on Sunday, March 23, 2008, members from the Youth Violence Strike Force and State Police Gang Unit were on patrol in the area of Norfolk Avenue & Burrell Street when they observed two individuals holding and pointing what looked to be firearms. When the individuals saw the officers approaching, one of the suspects quickly dropped the object the he was holding, an object that later turned out to be a firearm, while the other suspect quickly clutched at his waist area and began to run. While pursuing the suspects on foot, officers observed the 2nd suspect discard a 2nd firearm. The discarded firearm was later recovered by officers. All in all, officers recovered two loaded firearms. Officers arrested Melvin Smith, 21, of Dorchester and James Deal, 27, of Roxbury and charged both with the Unlawful Possession of a Firearm & Ammunition.

Context is everything. Here try this reference.

I got it the first time. I am more than familiar with the Urban Dictionary. I was making fun at attempts to be cute in the header without direct attack. I guess I'm dealing with people who only believe they are clever.

Next time I guess I'll just have to deal a bit more directly about the extent of the mysogyny inherent in that subject line.

My attempt to be clever was inspired by yours. I have no ill will toward women. Sorry if my use of the word bitch in that context was offensive or maybe you just want people to be aware it could be offensive. Either way. Point taken. I enjoy your comments.

It was an attention grabbing headline, I'll grant you that :-)
