Has Whitey Bulger been reduced to scamming Spare Change readers?

Here's a photo of the guy who's been scamming sympathetic Red Line riders by giving them a copy of the Metro or the Dig or God knows what instead of Spare Change News when they hand over a dollar (or more, since he begs for additional funds).

tried to give me $8 and a pile of coins back as change for a $20 at Davis Sq. I had to get him to give my $20 back, but not until after some kid watching him struggle to make change gave the dude another pile of change.

He's usually enjoying a smoke as he walks up and down the Park Street Red Line platform. This guy looks like one of the regulars who could "go off" anytime.

I just read through every last post on that live journal board. Very dismaying. What's with the "let's get him!!" mob mentality? What makes him "one of those regulars" who could "go off at anytime" ? One of "those"? As opposed to..."us"?

I'd say that crowds of commuter indifference harm that one guy more than he can harm any individual person. If a guy is resorting to selling free newspapers on the subway, I imagine his life has not gone very well. Instead of bristling at being made a sucker or having been "scammed", maybe treating the guy like a human being will diffuse all those terrible "threats" (perceived or real) that he seems to pose.

I used to live in Brockton and took the commuter rail into the city for work. This guy was all the way at the Brockton commuter rail stop selling his papers.
