Jury convicts two for double murder at Dorchester restaurant

A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found Emmanuel Pina and Sandro Tavares guilty of first-degree murder for the shooting deaths of a man with whom they'd had a beef and an innocent cook gunned down by an errant bullet at the now closed Ka-Carlos Bar and Grill in 2009, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

The verdict means mandatory sentences of life without possibility of parole. The two were also found guilty of shooting a third man, who survived.

According to prosecutors and police, Pina and Tavares opened fire outside the restaurant on Jovany Eason early on Aug. 2, 2009. One of the bullets came through a window and hit Manuel Monteiro, a cook at the restaurant who was working two jobs to put his daughters through college - and who tried to defuse an argument among the men earlier that night.

The restaurant never recovered from the incident.

Hingham man sent away for tire-iron beating outside West Roxbury party

Thomas McCann, 27, was sentenced to 18 months in jail today for bashing a man's head in with a tire iron at a party he crashed in West Roxbury last year, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Diane Kottmyer technically sentenced McCann to 2 1/2 years in jail following his conviction on assault and battery causing serious bodily injury, but suspended 12 months of the sentence on the provision he stay out of trouble and take anger-management classes after he's released from jail.

Prosecutors had asked for three to five years in state prison. They said McCann's victim, 33, required brain surgery and lost 40% of his peripheral vision due to the attack.

The DA's office said McCann learned of the June 6 party on Pleasantdale Road on Facebook, then showed up with a couple of friends and his sister, who got into an argument with the victim that spilled outside around 3:40 a.m. McCann ended the argument with the tire iron, then fled in a car back to Hingham as the victim lay at the end of the driveway. Some of the victim's blood was found on the steering wheel.

Marches, students and nurses

Protester in Downtown CrossingOn march through Downtown Crossing. Photo by Jeff Tamagini. More.

Occupy Boston almost had its first arrests Wednesday. Marchers moved out from Dewey Square and surrounded the Bank of America headquarters on Federal Street (where 24 had been arrested in a different protest on Friday). They began to lock hands around the entrances. Police called in prisoner transport wagons. And then, they broke for a bite to eat. Protesters also demonstrated outside Goldman Sachs offices on High Street:

Later, back at Dewey Square, one protester doused a Channel 25 photographer and his camera with water. Bill Sheerin, an assignment editor at the Fox affiliate, tweeted:

According to photog, this person stalked & taunted him before finally throwing water on his camera.

Joining the protests yesterday: students at local colleges and members of the Massachusetts Nurses Association. Princeton (and former Harvard) professor Cornel West also showed his support:

Berklee students are also on hand, lending their musical talents to the Dewey Square tent city.

The Phoenix reports on the good relations between the protesters and the city; talks to Tom Menino about it all.

Woman in hot water over hot water

MBTA Transit Police arrested a Philadelphia woman at the South Station bus terminal last night after she allegedly flung a cup of hot water at the manager of the terminal McDonald's.

According to a police report, Rhita Lingham, 56, initially ordered a cheeseburger and milkshake, but when she realized she didn't have enough money for the order, asked the server to take out the milkshake, but give her a cup of hot water instead. When the cashier said that would be 25 cents, Lingham went into a rage, grabbed the cup and threw it at the manager, dousing her leg with hot water.

No happy ending for Chinatown massage parlor

Boston Police report arresting a Chinatown woman last night on charges her Hudson Street massage parlor offered a bit more than just shoulder rubs.

Police say an undercover officer, responding to "numerous complaints from community members" about sex for a fee on the third floor of 20 Hudson St. arranged for a massage around 8 p.m. yesterday:

The undercover officer, on arrival was met by an Asian woman who led him into a room and subsequently told that the price for a massage was $60.00. The undercover officer was then attended to by a second woman who then asked the officer if he required additional sexual services, it would cost him $80.00. Upon determining that this massage parlor was indeed a front for sexual services, the detective then alerted other officers who responded and detained the two parties.

Linping Gu, 50, was charged with deriving support from the earnings of a prostitute. Police say officers seized "a substantial amount of money from the suspects, ledgers and spreadsheets for the business."

Yelp review from guy disappointed he couldn't get a good massage at the massage parlor.

Innocent, etc.

Cell service coming to all T stops, tunnels, but not all cell users will have coverage

The Daily Free Press reports the company that's built cell antennas along the Red and Orange lines is extending the service to the underground portions of the Green and Blue lines.

Whether you can actually take advantage of that depends on whether your carrier has signed a contract with the company. AT&T and T-Mobile, for example, will have systemwide coverage; Verizon has only signed a contract for four downtown stations, the Globe reports.
