5-minute delay?
Usually the fireworks start with the last note of "Stars & Stripes Forever", but this year there was a 5-minute delay between the end of the Sousa march and the first firework launch. The folks around me wondered if they were having technical problems with the barge or with synchronizing the music. Anyone know more?
CBS had a bunch of commercials to air?
That's what it seemed like to those of us watching at home.
CBS
More commercials. The fireworks ended just before 11:00, so everything worked out. Oh, for the time when the fireworks were longer and earlier in the evening.
Fuck CBS.
The first hour and a half of the Pops concert had about 2-3 commercial breaks. At 10 PM, when they turned it over to CBS, they had 4 commercial breaks in the half hour before the fireworks. We also have that hack Craig Ferguson as our permanent host...and he has absolutely fuck-all to do with Boston and was only even naturalized as an American in 2008. And on top of that, something like 6 or 7 of the past 10 years, our musical guest has been a country music singer which is completely out of tune with the general vibe of the city...but appeals to the middle of America.
Now, finally a complaint about WBZ's radio coverage on 1030AM. The entire concert was good and Jordan Rich is a good host...but when they turn the music over to the fireworks crew for the final half hour of fireworks, they just put a mic up to one of the speakers at the Hatch Shell, rather than get a direct feed from the source. It sounds AWFUL and the fireworks frequently punctuate the music by overtaking the attention of the mic which drowns out the song. I guess they're trying to appeal to their radio listeners who aren't anywhere near the river...like it's some kind of 1950's broadcast and the person can't catch it on TV or something. It just sucks as the entire concert is great from the radio on the Cambridge side of the river...then the music just sounds like crap when the fireworks start. They should setup a local antenna and broadcast the music on a separate channel or something as a temporary direct feed...or just send the direct feed to 1030 for that half hour.
Try WCRB next time
I listened to the end of the concert & the fireworks music on WCRB & it was a great broadcast. (We listened to the music while watching the fireworks from Millennium Park - great views & no commercials!)
Interesting
I'll check it out next time, thanks.
And on top of that, something
And on top of that, something like 6 or 7 of the past 10 years, our musical guest has been a country music singer which is completely out of tune with the general vibe of the city...but appeals to the middle of America.
I didn't know anything about the whole country singer deal until I heard the announcement over the speakers last night when I got to the Esplanade, but I thought that was absolutely ridiculous and so out of place. The only way the idea of country music at a Boston celebration could be more wrong would be if he was wearing a Yankees hat.
glad I didn't watch in TV
I was watching the fireworks on the water, and a boat nearby had a flat-panel TV. I glanced over a few times, and they were changing shots every 2-3 seconds, constantly. I felt like I was going to get a seizure...
