An independent jumps into 3rd Suffolk race

John KeithJohn Keith, a South End real-estate broker, blogger and columnist, today pulled papers to run in the June 16 election to replace state Rep. Sal DiMasi.

Campaign Web site.

Keith's statement follows:

I wanted you to be among the first to know that I am running for 3rd Suffolk District State Representative. The 3rd Suffolk District includes Boston's South End, North End, Chinatown, Bay Village, Waterfront, and Financial District neighborhoods, as well as parts of Roxbury and Beacon Hill.

I am very excited about this. I have fresh ideas and a unique point of view. Because of this, I believe I will be an effective state legislator. I am committed to improving people's lives, both in my community and throughout the Commonwealth.

The most-important issues to us right now are the economy, public health and welfare, and the role of government in our lives. I have specific proposals to address each of these issues and many more; details will be forthcoming on my website, this week.

If people have a question or want to know more, there's a 'contact me' form on my website, at http://johnakeith.com, or they can leave a comment on your site and I'll try to respond.

By the way, I am running as an Independent; the other announced-candidates will be facing-off in the Democratic Primary on May 19th. I will meet the winner of that primary in the Special Election, on June 16th.

Abominable snowmobile on the Lynnway

OMG, moron!

Cody Pomeray forwarded this fine example of Massholishness on the Lynnway this morning, adding:

The part you can't see is that this guy is also on the phone while driving the abominable snowmobile. Perhaps he was calling a friend to borrow a brush?

The most popular elementary schools in Boston

This file contains maps and data given to the School Committee last week as it considered the proposed five-zone school-assignment plan. Page 12 shows the elementary (and middle) schools ranked by how sought after they are in the annual school lottery. Page 13 shows the locations of schools in such serious need of remedial help that the state has taken notice.

Limber up your neck before you look at the file, because, at least on my laptop, all the pages came out sideways.

Via Geeky Mama, who provides an easier to read list of elementary schools in the current West Zone (West Roxbury, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain and part of Roxbury) ranked by lottery popularity.

Gunfire on quiet Roslindale street: One man injured, residents alarmed

UPDATE: 15-year-old from Hyde Park arrested for the shooting.

A Haydn Street resident forwards the news that a man was shot between 11 p.m. and midnight on March 1 by at least one of five bullets fired at him and an acquaintance.

The neighborhood had been quiet since last March, when some Washington-Beech residents who had been linked to a spate of shootings, including one murder, moved out before the Boston Housing Authority could evict them.

Now residents of the side street off Washington are rattled again:

This is a quiet little street with many young families with young children, and an incident like this is shocking and disturbing to many of us here. ... We've lived in Roslindale since 2003 and have loved it, but the prevalence of violent crime here, especially in the past couple of years, has convinced us that we don't want to raise our son in Roslindale. The day after the shooting we decided we were putting our place on the market and heading for the hills.

Sardine-canning narrowly averted at Storrow Drive onramp

Mats Tolander posts photos from yesterday's "unimpressive" nor'easter, including one of an 18-wheeler whose driver suddenly realized he wasn't going to make it out of the tunnel from I-93 to Storrow Drive in one piece and so stopped just in time - but after he blew by the "NO TRUCKS" sign.
