Cheeses: Can West Roxbury support another pizza place?
By adamg on Thu, 12/04/2008 - 3:53pm
Wicked Local West Roxbury reports that Upper Crust (yes, that Upper Crust, the one that you are mandated by law to either love or hate) is looking to move into the renovated space where Tai Ho used to be. Wants to serve booze, too.
No doubt all the other pizzamakers along Centre Street (last count: Half a gazillion) will be at the West Roxbury Neighborhood Council's discussion on the proposal on Tuesday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m. at the police station. You may recall how the pepperoni flew when Papa John's moved into the Roche Bros. Plaza.

After All Of The Puns On The "Big Red" Thread...
... I certainly wouldn't have the crust to make any more here.

True
There's no topping that one.
You're right
Any way you slice it.
Forget the pizza, how about a hookah?
An interesting note came today from the W. Roxbury google group, about the Sultan Club, opening at 1524 W. Roxbury Pkwy (Rt 1).
Fifteen dollar sheesha
Fifteen dollar sheesha rentals!
Hookahs in West Roxbury?
Oh, those kinds of hookahs. For a moment, I thought you meant the type of hookahs Needham and Wellesley police keep chahging with illegal acts.
Interesting, though! Who knew?
A hookah?
Who ya callin a hookah! That's in Sultan!
Enough dough for you?

I posted on the WR group
I posted on the WR group about the Sultan Club. If I get a chance I'll stop by the site tomorrow and take a couple o' pix of the sign. Info seems to be slim regarding this place.
euphemism
At least when i view the Sultan advert page, what does "There will be a and, singer and a bellydancer (Lola)" mean? I suspect contraband!
Do they not know every cop in the city lives in WR?
For the record, nothing
For the record, nothing suggests that this place isn't anything but on the level. But for arguments sake:
Max, where this club is located, BPD tend to overlook. The only access is from the VFW, which means that BPD have to drive into Dedham, bang a U at the Mall, and circle back. not impossible, certainly, but unlikely to be patrolled regularly. (An underground/after-hours casino operated at this site for quite a while, fairly openly.)
VFW Pkwy
It's actually on the VFW Pkwy (Rt. 1), not the W. Roxbury Pkwy.
Pizza?
Please someone stop the spread of these horrible yuppie pizza joints? I had a slice of the whole wheat pizza at the Coolidge Corner store and I've had frozen pizza that was better. After the glory days of Anna's on Revere Beach and the late, lamented Circle Pizza, the Upper Crust will hopefully go the way of J. Bildner and expand like crazy and then when the recession really kicks in, they'll all go under and we won;t have to look at those insufferable print ads anymore.
Pizza quality
In my experience, the pizza quality at Upper Crust is highly variable. Sometimes we have great pizza there, and sometimes we have... frankly, awful pizza there. Like the dough didn't rise right or something, all kind of lumpy and floppy, a few steps down from Bertuccis (where sometimes you get that burned crap stuck to the crust).
If a new UC opens up closer to home, I'll be happy; I'll probably get za there sometimes (and sometimes at Bertucci's and sometimes at Real Deal (which, frankly, is always pretty lousy pizza)). If UC delivers to my house, they'll win our business for sure.
IMHO, the best thing about UC is the Uncommon Pizza: Bacon, Pineapple, and Jalapenos. I love that... when they don't fuck up the crust.
DeNo's rules
Nothing more need be said.
Well, except that I admit to a fondness for the Pleasant Cafe pizza.
But after that, that's all that needs be said.
What are more pizza parlors needed for?
With obesity at alltime epidemic proportions here in the United States at large and here in the Boston area, more pizza parlors are the last thing we need, foodwise. Healthier food is needed.
What's unhealthy about pizza?
"Pizza" isn't a monolithic food. It is not inherently unhealthy. It can have whole wheat crust, good toppings, low fat cheese, reasonable portions, etc. The stuff I make at home isn't the least bit unhealthy, and is really about the only way I can get my youngest (aka "the fruit bat")to eat veggies .
No SINGLE FOOD is ever unhealthy ... it is the quantity, selection, and combination of food a person eats over the course of a week or a lifetime that is healthy or unhealthy.
do other area pizza joints have beer?
Unless I'm mistaken, none of the other pizza joints on Centre in WR have beer or wine licenses. I think the closest pizza places with beer are The Pleasant on Washington St. and Bertucci's on the parkway. Across the street from the old Tai Ho is West on Centre which has an upscale menu and a bar.
It's not the crust its the beer that's the threat. Parking options are not optimal.
Good point
Also, that space is large enough it would probably be a sit-down restaurant, unlike most of the other pizza places along Centre (well, a fancier sit-down place than, say, Real Deal or DeNo's).
But when is West Roxbury/Roslindale going to get a sit-down Chinese restaurant? Besides Spring Garden (that place near the Home Depot), that is.
Phuket
Exactly, it's big enough to have a double door entrance which is a big plus for comfort in the winter. Add beer and wine and you've got a significant difference from all the pizza joints on Center and that does not even including the Italian restaurant near Phuket (fuck-it). Imagine is they have pasta and/or meat dishes. Boo Ya. They have a kitchen not just ovens.
There are four other pizza places going outbound on Center before you get to DeNo's and that doesn't even include Tony's which is three lights further out. I don't think the five pizza places between Tai Ho and Tony's are going to be too happy about Tai Ho Pizza getting a liquor license. I wonder if they already have a city counselor in their back pocket.
I think Mandarin Gourmet on Putterham Circle has the distinction of being the only Chinese place in the area you'd bring you mother.
Center street, as a location for a restaurant, has a big problem... parking, parking, parking. As you've observed, one can double park in West Roxbury to pick up take-out. Finding parking for a sit down meal is another issue. Maybe Tai Ho's place will have a talk with Holy Name.
Brannely's
Brannely's on Washington - couple of blocks from The Pleasant - also has a decent pie and beer, as I recall.

Penguin's at Brigham Circle
Penguin's serves a good selection of brew with your pizza.
