God Bless the trooper, all of us in law enforcement pray for him. And, to those of you who hate cops (Swirlygrrl) or who think being a cop is not dangerous (Brett)....think about this sort of thing next time you go to write something nasty about us.

It's a shame that all of you in law inforcement stay silent when a guy hits a baby carriage in a crosswalk. You may think it's "there but for the grace of God." It's actually just a shame on each and every one who stay silent.

I don't think Swrrly hates cops.

From what I've read, she wants them to be accountable for their actions. It is a dangerous job but the danger is not a blank check for unethical or irresponsible behavior. Believe me, we want to like how the BPD conducts itself on the job. We don't want to feel that we might be unsafe in the presence of police. We don't want to feel like police have an entitlement to certain jobs to the exclusion of other workers. And we don't want to feel like police are not accountable to the department for their actions.

Part of the problem is that when one policeman is criticized, or nine for that matter, the entire force feels criticized, and that should not happen. On the other hand, policemen would do themselves a favor if they would not close ranks when one of their own crosses the line. I am referring to the Woodman incident were the policemen closed ranks and a supervisor who was not on the scene wrote the action report. This is transparently a CYA and it does not build our confidence in the police, quite the opposite. Police, like every other element of our society, must earn the trust they seek.

I am sorry to hear about the officer who was hit by a drunk. I hope he has a complete and speedy recovery.

except Swirrlygirl never says that cop or this specific policeman. She usually just uses the word "police" and then becomes very condesening about how she is lucky that she makes enough not to have to work extra jobs and what not.

If she singled out specific officers it would be one thing. But she doesn't. Theres the problem.
