Jennifer Dines pays a visit to the Pleasant Cafe, which has been serving pizza and other fare on Washington Street in Roslindale for 80 years now.

The article is the start of a program by the Boston Preservation Alliance and Boston Main Streets with the Lilla G. Frederick Pilot Middle School, where, over the next year, students will write their own profiles of other "legacy" businesses in their neighborhoods.

Coyote up a hill in the Roslindale part of the Arboretum

Yesterday, roving UHub photographer Dan Peters spied this comfy coyote up a hill at the part of the Arnold Arboretum in Roslindale that's across Walter Street from the main part of the Arbs, where the solar panels are.

WFXT reports a 34 driver will be getting a stern talking to from his bosses after a motorist gave the station some video showing him or her reacting to getting cut off on Washington Street at Wellsmere Road in Roslindale by just continuing to go down Washington and right through a red light at Cornell Street.

Exodus Bagels announced today it will not be reopening its Jamaica Plain outlet, which it had shut during the pandemic last year - but that that means it could be expanding its Roslindale take-out window outside its bagel bakery into something larger. Read more.

Workhub at the Substation, the quieter of the two tenants in the Roslindale Substation in Roslindale Square announced today that it will be expanding into the cavernous former transformer room that Turtle Swamp Brewing is vacating in September and will continue to run a weekend beer hall and community gathering spot there. Turtle Swamp Brewing announced today it will be closing its beer garden in the Roslindale Substation next month. Turtle Swamp says it will be open Fridays and Saturdays for the rest of the month and just Saturdays in September, with its last day being Sept. 25, to coincide with the renewed Roslindale Porchfest.

That will leaves Distraction Brewing on Belgrade Avenue for Squaregoers seeking locally brewed beer.

WCVB reports a pet tortoise that vanished from its Dedham home in 2019 appeared this year in Roslindale, where some Facebook sleuthing reunited the long-lived reptile with its owner.

You may recall how Venkman the Corn Snake went on a yearlong slither-about in Roslindale before being reunited with his owner last year.

The children of Benjamin Gold, who ran a plumbing business at Washington and Lesher streets in Roslindale until his 2005 death, have proposed razing the business and the neighboring Little Peoples Playhouse daycare for a building with 19 condos topped by a "green" roof covered by soil and plantings. WCVB reports a clerk at Roslindale Food Mart on Washington Street in Roslindale told a woman she'd won $500 on a lottery ticket - but that the ticket was actually for $1,000, so he apparently pocketed the rest. The clerk has been fired. Todesca's, another market, is across a side street from Roslindale Food Mart, for what it's worth.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today voted 4-2 to approve Juan Chavez's proposal to replace his auto-collision shop on Washington Street at Bexley Road with a four-story apartment/commercial building - which means the proposal was actually rejected because it didn't get the 5 votes required under state law.
