For the small-time news west of Boston, try the Westminster Vine

I've recently come across a great example of small-town journalism and wanted to post to a wider audience. The "Westminster Vine" is an online newsletter managed by Jennifer Shenk with numerous local contributors.

Ignorance on parade in the Herald

I wish I could figure out why the Boston Herald prints letters to the editor which are so mind-numbingly stupid that they leave the reader agape, his jaw dropped so far that it spills his morning coffee.

This morning's chestnut was Harry Shuris of Winchester, who derided the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission for, um, doing its job by recalling a novelty chair decorated with lead paint. He offered the following "proof" of why this shouldn't matter:

Expect delays on the D Line during Memorial Day weekend

If you're staying in town for the long Memorial Day Weekend, you'll want to be aware that the D Line will be out of service from Saturday through Monday night. Buses will be in service to provide transportation between Reservoir and Fenway subway stations, according to the MBTA.

Scott Brown: Don't Ask Don't Tell

Scott Brown seems to have become much more cautious as he matured. Once known for wearing pink leather shorts on a date with his future wife, Scott

....believes any vote for repeal [of Don't Ask Don't Tell] should be put off until the Pentagon has time to formulate a plan for implementing any new policy.

"I am keeping an open mind, but I do not support moving ahead until I am able to finish my review, the Pentagon completes its study, and we can be assured that a new policy can be implemented without jeopardizing the mission of our military," Brown said in a statement provided to the Globe.

Will Scott finish his review before he goes on vacation? What about the military men and women who are being outed and losing their careers while Scott Brown dithers. How does that make us safe?

Why Vote for Baker, Cahill, or any Candidate Based on an Advertisement? pamelajulian.com

Gubernatorial candidate Cahill and Governor Patrick’s response to the current million dollar plus negative television advertising funded by the Republican Governors Association provides an opportunity for educators to bring this story to the attention of their elementary and high school students before the school year ends.

If students learn how to evaluate media messages, why voters choose candidates based on an advertisement, and how and why political campaigns employ focus groups to develop media messages, they will learn how to critically evaluate media messages, how to evaluate speakers, how to evaluate writers, and how to form an argument orally and in writing.

Dedicated to Jaewon Martin Demand for Change

Never have I felt how compelling my blog name was until this day. In no way would I attempt to compare my title to the suffering of the Martin family right now but a level of frustration continues to mount that supports the grief the family must feel.

We already know much of the details of Jawwon Martin's murder, which is not why I am writing this article; Jaewon's age, school, academic intelligence etc. are all above par for a public school student. No this is a question to the public.

So I was sitting on the Memorial Drive side of river bank on the Charles unable to let go of the apoplectic emotions that stirred inside. I already knew what would follow this event; people would be outraged, the mayor, commissioner, and other public figures would make statements and hold a press conference; for a few weeks Jaewon would be memorialized. In other words nothing would really change. This time, that was not enough, so I began writing feverishly about real solutions to this violent conundrum. I wanted to really understand what was at the heart of the issue- safety! No surprise there.

WBZ-TV 4 Morning News Now Starts @ 4:30AM with David and Paula!!

I wake up every morning for the CBS Morning News @ 4:30am with Michelle Gielan, 'til I found out that the WBZ-TV 4 Morning News is on now at 4:30am with Paula Eben and David Wade. WTF! I thought I'd woke up late but it will now replace the CBS Morning News from now on, every morning first before all the local news media outlets in the City of Boston. How will WBZ-TV make your morning before "NewsCenter 5, 7 News Today In New England and Fox 25 Morning News?" I'm a big fan of WBZ-TV News 4 anyways.

Young People Rising

Recently I had a brief conversation with a young man and woman in a festive setting. Loud urban hip hop music was playing in the background; while clusters of people in their mid to late twenties, occupied a portion of the yard space where I grew up celebrating similar festive events. From birthday parties to cookouts, this place has always been a gathering space where good friends and family come together to enjoy each others company- and learn from one another.

As things were settling down around 11:00on a Thursday night, I made a brief announcement to the women among the some thirty odd people, about a Young Black Women's Society event on Saturday- recommending that they attend. One young man exclaimed, "Can I go?" I replied, absolutely you can go, and you should go, you might learn something about how to truly treat a woman right. While my response was stated somewhat jokingly, there is a little truth in jest. His lady friend chided him implying that he just might learn something, as well. He conceded in his remarks acknowledging what was likely to be partial reality relative to the conversation.
