The Huntington News reports an apparent we'll-get-to-it-when-we-get-to-it campus mail system that meant some students didn't get absentee ballots in time to vote in last month's election.

The Huntington News reports Northeastern University plans to fill some shelves in its Snell Library with books, which the library hasn't had since the pandemic. The News notes Northeastern removed books to expand social distancing for study spaces in the time of Covid, but adds the school first started denuding library shelves of books in 2018.

Cory Doctorow reports what happened when a Northeastern University official tried to prove some sort of point about workspace efficiency by having heat sensors secretly installed under the desks of grad students in the school's Privacy Institute, in that fancy new ISEC building on the other side of train tracks from the main campus. It did not end well, although at least he didn't try to take anybody's red Swingline stapler, so the building still stands.

A Northeastern new-media manager was arrested today on charges he concocted a story of a bomb going off in his lab last month - which led to the shutdown of the building and the surrounding campus - and that he wrote the alleged terror note, which blamed Mark Zuckerberg for unleashing a horrifying metaverse, just a few hours earlier on one of his lab's own computers. Around 10:40 p.m., Northeastern University Police issued a shelter-in-place order and told people to avoid Snell Quad and Curry Student Center. They lifted the shelter-in-place order about half an hour later, but still told people to avoid Snell Quad and the student center. Read more.

A judge yesterday sided with Northeastern University over the town of Nahant, ruling a state law aimed at protecting land set aside for conservation does not apply to the school's plans to expand its Marine Research Center on some long vacant land it owns in the town. Read more.

Live Boston reports that Boston, state and federal bomb squads swarmed local college campuses this morning to check for the sorts of devices that sent a Northeastern professor to the hospital last night after he opened a hardened case with a bomb inside. Read more.

Researchers at Northeastern University are testing a way to protect Boston from storm surges caused by climate change by deploying thousands of biodegradable mats that would grow marsh grasses on top and seaweed below to absorb some of the energy from the surges before they could slam into Boston's low-lying areas. Starting March 1, Northeastern University will still make testing available to students and staff, but people without any symptoms will only have to take a test if they feel like it, the school announced today. Along with that, the university will be dropping its Covid-19 dashboard.

Boston firefighters responded to Northeastern University's Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Complex, at 805 Columbus Ave. after some sort of machine on an upper floor caught fire around 10:30 p.m.

Firefighters, ordered to wear breathing masks, quickly put out the flames and unplugged the device, then stayed on scene for awhile to make sure there were no hazardous chemicals in the air.

Northeastern University is now reporting a breakdown of types of Covid-19 cases on its campus since Sept. 1 on its Covid-19 dashboard. The school, which has its own testing facilities, reports a total of 35 positive tests for the omicron variant. Read more.

Yesterday, as it was announcing that students and staff had to get booster shots by next month, Northeastern University was canceling a two-day on-campus vaccination clinic next week after information from people signing up somehow wound up on the provider's Web site. Read more.
